Paintings

In this section you will view paintings in watercolor and oil, often portraits of mothers and children captured in moments that reveal character and connection. Several of Carolyn's paintings depict the lives, spirituality, and physical beauty of people in Africa or of African descent. These images are inspired by two years with the Peace Corps in Burkina Faso, West Africa from 1967-1969, as well as an extended African family. “Breakfast with Obama” extends Carolyn’s passion for social equality and for expressing the preciousness of human lives in her art.

Other paintings are inspired by the emotional power of everyday objects, moments and settings in the world around her.  Two versions of a single stand of tiger lilies in an evergreen bower are like verses in a poem.  “Dupont Circle” captures the drama of floating on an endless escalator from darkness into light.  Onions and garlic sparkling in the afternoon sun on a backyard table, promise the simple pleasures of a summertime dinner.

All of the paintings express through subject, color and light, the feelings that ignited the artist and that, hopefully, will inspire the viewer as well.

Drawings

A medium that invites spontaneity and sensitivity, drawing is the foundation for art in all mediums, as well as a vital medium in itself. You will find in this section a selection of drawings in charcoal, conte crayon and pastel, mostly, but not exclusively of the nude and the human figure.
